“I couldn’t do otherwise”: a nurse donated part of her liver to another man’s boy
Braden Outen, an 8-year-old student attending high school in the United States. He was a perfectly healthy and active child, no different from his peers, studying, playing sports, playing with his friends, until one day he became ill.
Braden’s parents grew increasingly concerned and decided to take their son to a hospital in Milwaukee for medical attention. Following an extensive examination, it was discovered that the young boy was afflicted with a highly aggressive virus that rapidly destroying his liver cells.
The medical professionals did not hide the severity of the illness from Braden’s parents, and they urged them to urgently seek out a liver donor to save their child’s life. The doctors explained that a liver transplant was the only viable option for restoring Braden’s health and enabling him to lead a normal life again.
According to Braden’s mother, Ruth, “When we were first informed about the transplant, we were both completely overwhelmed. We had no concept of the gravity of the situation”.
As the days passed, Braden’s condition deteriorated rapidly, and despite their best efforts, no suitable liver donor could be found. Witnessing the anguish and despair of Braden’s parents, Kami Lorenz, an intensive care nurse, offered to donate a portion of her liver. Driven by a genuine desire to help this family and their child, she stepped forward as a potential donor.
Luckily, Cami turned out to be a perfect match as donor for Braden. Her liver was partially transplanted into the child, which resulted in his gradual recovery.
“There are no words to express our gratitude to her! She is a selfless person who was not afraid of the pain to save our child’s life! Kami is now a member of our close-knit family to us”, said James Outen, the boy’s father.
Braden and Cami spent a few more weeks in the hospital before going home.
The parents of the boy were immensely grateful to the nurse for saving their child’s life. They expressed their gratitude by inviting her to join them for a family photo shoot.
Braden has resumed his studies at school and is now living the life of a normal, healthy schoolboy. He feels great and is enjoying his daily routine without any health issues.
